Do I Have a Cavity?
Tooth decay can present itself in several ways. Some of the most common symptoms of cavities include
- Pain when biting or eating
- Sensitivity to sweet drinks or food
- Floss or food catching between teeth
- Something feeling ‘off’ around your tooth
- Occasional discomfort, pain or throbbing
Since cavities may not be visible during an exam, digital X-rays allow us to screen for areas of decay between teeth or deep inside of grooves on chewing surfaces. A cavity will gradually spread deeper into the tooth unless it’s treated quickly, so early treatment is essential regardless of whether the tooth is causing pain.
What to Expect
During your dental filling treatment, your dentist will sometimes place a rubber dam to isolate your tooth and prevent aspirating any water or materials. We also use a special tool that helps to gently prop your mouth open as it sucks out the water, ensuring your comfort. We will gently numb your tooth, clean out the decayed structures, then shape the filling to recreate the void in your enamel. Your tooth should feel numb for a few hours afterward.
Advantages of White Fillings
In addition to their cosmetic appeal, white fillings are also less invasive to teeth than traditional silver restorations. This characteristic allows us to preserve more tooth structure. We can also bond them in areas of your smile that are visible to other people, without aesthetic concern.
