Inlays and Onlays in SE Edmonton

If you have an older amalgam (silver) filling that is beginning to fail, it needs to be replaced with a larger and more durable restoration. Although crowns are a traditional option, inlays and onlays offer a more conservative choice in restoring your tooth.

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlay/onlay illustrationThese lab-made fillings are sometimes referred to as ‘three-quarter crowns’ as they are larger than a traditional filling but smaller than a full ‘cap’. Inlays and onlays provide added reinforcement for teeth with significant structural damage or large, leaky dental fillings. However, they help preserve a maximum amount of tooth structure by eliminating the need to immediately progress to a full crown. Unlike amalgam fillings, inlays and onlays create a close bond between the restoration and your tooth.

Most inlays and onlays are made of highly durable porcelain or ceramic material. Each one is matched to your smile’s natural colour.

Your Treatment Experience

Since inlays and onlays are made in a lab, two visits are required. During your first appointment, we will numb the tooth, remove your old filling, shape up the tooth and then take an impression. This visit takes about an hour to complete. You’ll wear a temporary inlay/onlay while the permanent one is being crafted in the lab. In about a week, you’ll return for 20-30 minutes to have the permanent restoration bonded to your tooth.

Our goal is to create a restoration where you cannot tell the difference in where the tooth stops and your inlay/onlay begins.

To ensure your comfort, we also offer in-house sedation options to help you relax. We want your experience to be one that’s as comfortable as possible, whether you have a small cavity or require full-mouth restoration.
