Paediatric Cleanings in SE Edmonton
Six Month Cleanings
Your child’s first dental cleanings are typically with the dentist. As they get a bit older, they transition to seeing our hygienist. During their visit, we will gently scale away buildup, polish off surface stains and then apply fluoride.
Oral Hygiene for Children
Establishing a proper oral hygiene routine can help your family break the cycle of decay and gum disease. Encourage your child to brush for two minutes, twice a day, making circular motions on one tooth at a time.
After brushing all of their teeth, help them clean between each one with floss or a floss pick. Until your child is old enough to tie their own shoes, they’ll usually need parental guidance during brushing and flossing.
A Focus on Prevention
In addition to children’s cleanings, we also offer professional fluoride treatments and sealants. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel to make it more resistant to cavities, sensitivity and demineralisation. We recommend an application after each dental cleaning.
If your child has their permanent molars (back teeth) we also recommend placing sealants. Sealants are protective coatings that block out food debris, acid and bacteria, making teeth easier to clean. Sealants only take a few minutes to apply and significantly lower your child’s cavity risk.
Will My Child Need X-rays?
Occasional dental X-rays help us to monitor your child’s oral development and tooth eruption patterns. We may recommend occasional imaging to screen for cavities and orthodontic complications, such as impacted teeth.
